Romanian director Cristian Mungiu won his second Palme d’Or with his latest outing, which follows a Romanian-Norwegian family as it moves to a remote part of Norway. Their seemingly trouble-free integration into the local community becomes more complicated when the parents are accused of violent behavior toward their children. Mungiu takes a nuanced look at questions of identity, parenthood, and the possibilities of co-existence in a culturally divided Europe. One family’s drama grows into a morally ambivalent social and legal conflict that pits traditional religious values against progressive notions of child welfare. Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve excel as the film’s two central figures.
