New York in the 1980s is changing literally before one’s eyes. The city offers the promise of getting rich quick, but at the same time it is increasingly permeated by a gray zone of shady deals and dangerous connections. The good-natured engineer Irwin (Miles Teller), his straight-laced wife Hester (Scarlett Johansson), and their two sons lead a quiet, middle-class life – until, that is, Irwin’s charismatic brother Gary (Adam Driver) shows up with a lucrative side deal. Is this their chance to finally live the American dream? As a former police officer, Gary knows how to navigate the city’s unpredictable streets. But will he realize before it’s too late who he’s gotten himself mixed up with this time?
