Marie-Lou is the director of a nursing home, where she is trying to implement a new, more humane approach to caring for her clients. However, she runs into resistance from the staff, who are used to the old way of doing things. Meanwhile, theatre director Mari is presenting a new play while struggling with advanced cancer. When these two women meet by chance, a powerful bond forms between them, founded on mutual understanding and deep philosophical discussions on life and love, but also on capitalism and social structures. Ryûsuke Hamaguchi follows up on his Oscar-winning Drive My Car with a new film whose meditative and deeply emotional tone won over audiences at the main competition in Cannes, where its two leads shared the award for Best Actress.
