Synopsis

Three Colors: Blue is the first in Krzysztof Kieślowski’s trilogy of films named for the colors of the French flag, in which he explored the contemporary meaning of the French Revolutionary ideals of liberty, equality, and brotherhood. The meticulously crafted Blue is a meditation on the possibility of free choice for someone agonizingly bound to the past. After a car accident kills Julie’s daughter and husband (a renowned composer), she desperately tries to cut all ties to the past, dissociating herself from her previous life, including her own creative work. With the help of her husband’s former collaborator, she ultimately rejoins the musical score that is human society. For her portrayal of Julie, Juliette Binoche was awarded the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the 1993 Venice Film Festival.
