Horizons / El ser querido / Spain 2026
The subject of fathers who prioritize their careers over everyday life and thus lay the groundwork for later trauma is a relatively common one in contemporary cinema. Renowned Spanish filmmaker Esteban Garcia (an outstanding Javier Bardem) returns to his home country after many years away to shoot a new movie. He has even written the main character for his actress daughter, whom he hasn’t seen in many years, but even he doesn’t know to what extent his decision was influenced by his confidence in his daughter’s acting abilities. “Through the story of a father and his daughter, we wanted to talk about power relations, hierarchy and the world of cinema,” says director Rodrigo Sorogoyen, who showed the film in competition at Cannes.
