Romania competes with a film about boxing, the theatre, and a stalker

July 07, 2015, 18:00

His debut, If I Want to Whistle, I Whistle, won two awards at the Berlinale. Now his second feature-length film, Box, is competing for the Crystal Globe here at Karlovy Vary. Romanian artist Florin Şerban’s new movie looks at the fates of two people who seem at first glance to have nothing in common: a nineteen-year-old boxer of Roma heritage and an actress in her thirties living in a loveless marriage.

“I wanted to show the fates of two very different people and explore whether it was possible for them to have a romantic story,” said Şerban. “Box is a movie about a simple game with no rules, a game in which nobody is safe.” The director made an effort to distinguish the two sections of his new film, his and hers—through casting, for example. All of the characters around the amateur boxer are played by non-actors, while those surrounding the stage actress are played solely by acting professionals. Şerban didn’t choose the theatre as a setting at random. He has a degree in theatre studies in addition to film direction and philosophy.

Screenings of Box:
7. 7. 20.00 Grand Hall
8. 7. 13.00 Pupp
11. 7. 9.00 Drahomíra Cinema
