Florianópolis, Redemption and Barbarians among the non-statutory awards winners

July 07, 2018, 15:51

Non-statutory awards were announced on Saturday afternoon.

The award of international film critics FIPRESCI goes to Sueño Florianópolis (Argentina, Brasil, France, 2018) for being an elegant and complex comedy built with subtle humour and powerful characters.

The Ecumenical Jury gives the Award to the film Redemption about a man who goes through the process of redemption and reconciliation while trying to save his ill daughter for overcoming all kinds of narrow-mindedness to discover the healing beauty of openness and hope, for showing that God and humanity cannot be confined just to a set of rules and that one has to have a courage to be and for artistic quality where cinematography serves the story, adding another dimension to the experience of the struggle. The Ecumenical Jury made two Commandations to the films Winter Flies for poetic cinematography and the story which portrays the process of changing naïve dreams and finding a new perspective of reality and home and to Miriam Lies for using meaningful style to tell a simple story that subtly reveals the important issues of race, social status, false dreams and growing-up with integrity.

FEDEORA award by Federation of Film Critics of Europe and the Mediterranean for the best film from East of the West competition section belongs to Suleiman Mountain for a serious and complex filmmaking effort, well developed story and very good acting.

“I Do Not Care If We Go Down in History as Barbarians” won the Europa Cinemas Label award for the best European film in the Main Competition or the East of the West Competition. „First of all, we would like to thank the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival for having us and, especially, to congratulate the program department for choosing such great films. We are here on behalf of Europa Cinemas, the European network of art house cinemas. In the last week we enjoyed actresses, actors, scripts, photography, music, humour and tragedy, in many different ways from various countries. In one special film we experienced all these different elements composed in an original way. Through its many layers we saw the challenging ways of storytelling, rethinking one’s own approach to the darker pages of one’s history while refusing trivialization through comparison with other events. Its intellectual approach to the topic, at times makes you feel uncomfortable, but it also makes you laugh. It fights for the freedom of the arts against censorship and nationalism. That is why we as the Jury decide to award the Europa Cinemas label to “I do not care if we go down in history as barbarians” by the Romanian director Radu Jude,” says the jury.
