Festival tips for Saturday, 6 July

July 06, 2019, 6:00

The highlight of today will be the festival’s closing ceremony, which will get going at 4pm with the stars arriving at the red carpet in front of Hotel Thermal. During the ceremony in the Grand Hall, American actress Patricia Clarkson will receive the Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema from festival director Jiří Bartoška; she has worked with accomplished directors such as Lars von Trier, Woody Allen and Martin Scorsese, and in 2004 she was nominated for both an Oscar and a Golden Globe for her performance in the film Pieces of April. The second person to be awarded will be cinematographer Vladimír Smutný. This holder of seven Czech Lions will receive the KVIFF President’s Award for Contribution to Czech Cinema.

The closing picture of the festival’s 54th year is to be the charming comedy Late Night, which already enraptured audiences at the Sundance Festival. The film about the charismatic moderator of a night-time talk show, portrayed by Emma Thompson, will be showing on two film screens tonight: at 9pm in the Hotel Thermal Small Hall and at 10pm in Národní dům.

Film connoisseurs can end the festival in style with a screening of the seven and a half hour long opus magnum of the Hungarian legend of spiritual cinema Béla Tarr, Satantango. The film, which over the course of several autumn days captures the return of a false prophet to an impoverished village somewhere in the Hungarian puszta, will take over the comfortable Čas Cinema starting at 10am.

After the screening of the competition film Mosaic Portrait at 11:30am in Drahomíra Cinema, you will have the opportunity to have a discussion with its makers. The work by young Chinese director Zhai Yixiang tells the story of a pregnant fourteen-year-old girl. We also recommend for example the dark social satire Parasite, which took home the Palm d’Or from Cannes and which will run today at 9:30pm at the Karlovy Vary Municipal Theatre. We are showing a documentary about one of the key figures of the Czech cultural scene of the last six decades, Jiří Suchý – Tackling Life with Ease, from 10:30pm at Cinema B in Hotel Thermal. The day’s film program will wrap up starting at 11:59pm in Cinema Čas with the action spectacle from 1982 Rambo: First Blood.
