The 57th KVIFF’s Crystal Globe Competition begins. With a detective story and a Spanish siesta

July 01, 2023, 9:00

Today, the Grand Hall of the Thermal Hotel will present the first two films competing for the Crystal Globe. The first film will be the charming debut of Spanish director Itsaso Arana The Girls Are Alright, starting at 5:00 p.m. A summer story about a group of young women rehearsing a play in a country house, sharing their secrets and experiencing adventures big and small, attracts audiences with its playfulness in an almost fairy-tale setting. Also featuring a toad, lots of letters and a slightly confused prince.

The filmmaker, who was involved as an actress and screenwriter in The August Virgin (2019 KVIFF Crystal Globe Competition), offers a refreshing insight into the female soul spiced with campfire, songs and a touch of magic.

The first Czech film in the Crystal Globe Competition will be screened in the Grand Hall from 7:30 p.m. The world premiere of the gripping detective drama We Have Never Been Modern takes the audiences to a factory in the foothills of the Tatra Mountains in the late 1930s. The story of an aspiring doctor and mother-to-be (Eliška Křenková) who embarks on an investigation into the mysterious discovery of a newborn baby’s body, offers a progressive and profoundly human perspective on a theme that still resonates to today.

The director of the film, Matěj Chlupáček, is also a TV series maker, with successful series such as In Treatment or Rats to his credit. He is also known for his work as a producer.
