A notional highlight of Saturday evening at the 57th KVIFF was the screening of You Sing Loud, I Sing Louder, presented by Ewan and Clara McGregor. On Sunday, they spoke about the making of the film at a press conference together with the director Emma Westenberg and the actress and producer Vera Bulder.
When asked if he resisted the temptation to give his daughter acting advice, the world-famous actor laughed heartily. “In acting, it doesn’t matter how much experience you have. We all have the same task and responsibility towards the audience – to relax and really live the moment. So there isn’t really advice to be given,” McGregor explained.
“When you manage to lose yourself in the role, you feel free. It was absolutely amazing to be in the scene with my daughter,” he said of his filming with Clara. She not only played the lead role, but also produced the film and is the author of its central idea. “It started as a tiny, incomplete idea. I drew, of course, from my own life and personal experience. The idea then started developing with the help of my friend and colleague Vera Bulder,” explained Clara McGregor.
The director Emma Westenberg sees creative collaboration as the key to success. She shared her advice to aspiring filmmakers: “Just keep doing what you’re doing and surround yourself with the right people. A good film is always a group effort, a collaboration of more people.” And that is exactly what Clara McGregor and Vera Bulder are planning – they have revealed that they are already preparing their next film together.
