Crystal Globe Competition culminates with a glimpse into the Japanese household and the colonial era

July 04, 2024, 9:00

The battle for the Crystal Globe ends on Thursday. The 58th KVIFF brings together a total of twelve different films from various regions of the world, but also from the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The last two films, which will premiere in the Grand Hall of the Hotel Thermal, are linked by the theme of the human psyche. Starting at 5 p.m., Banzo will transport the audience to a tropical island off the coast of Africa where a mysterious disease called banzo has broken out. Those affected fall into apathy and lose the will to live. The protagonist of the film, doctor Afonso, discovers that it is not enough to treat the physical symptoms– he must understand the soul of those who have been uprooted. The film will have its international premiere at the festival.

Rude to Love presents a Japanese drama about a marriage that has lost its spark and the story of Momoko, who lives in isolation from everyone except her husband and the meals she lovingly prepares for him. The monotony of the woman’s life is only disrupted by a series of strange events – a suspicious garbage heap fire and the disappearance of a beloved cat, which gradually drive Momoko to become obsessed with the space underneath the floor of her house. The film, which explores the dark corners of human frustration and hysteria, will make its global premiere at 8 p.m.
