Previously announced films in the Crystal Globe Competition, Proxima Competition, Special Screenings, Special Screenings – Classics, Future Frames: Generation NEXT of European Cinema, and the special edition of Out of the Past are now complemented by the Horizons overview section, the showcase of experimental films gathered under the Imagina section, and a selection of genre or “midnight” films in the Afterhours section. The festival will present more than 130 feature-length fiction and documentary films.
Horizons – the festival’s popular section – will feature 55 new films from the current festival season. Films from the recent Cannes festival will be strongly represented, and Karlovy Vary audiences will therefore have the chance to see, for example, the Palme d’Or-winning and gripping drama Fjord directed by Cristian Mungiu, the latest works by Oscar-winning filmmakers, Fatherland by Pawel Pawlikowski and All of a Sudden by Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, the winner of the prestigious Un Certain Regard section Everytime, as well as distinctive auteur films from Nepal, Rwanda, and Costa Rica.
From Berlinale, audiences can look forward to Yellow Letters, awarded the Golden Bear, and a melancholic biopic about legendary jazz pianist Bill Evans. Films from Venice and the Sundance festival, which this year was held in Park City for the last time, will also maintain their traditional presence. A number of “returning” filmmakers – whose previous works were premiered at the Karlovy Vary festival in one of its competition sections – will also present their newest films: Cyril Aris will bring A Sad and Beautiful World, Visar Morina will present Shame and Money, and Andreus Blaževičius will introduce How to Divorce during the War.
For the thirteenth time, Imagina will also be represented in Karlovy Vary, a section dedicated to approximately twenty short and feature-length films with a bold and experimental approach to storytelling and style. While three films – the feature Because I Have To and the shorts Exvotos and Volklore – will have their world premieres at the Karlovy Vary festival, Black Seas, With a Kind Regard, and Last night I stayed within myself and this morning I decided to live here will be presented as international premieres. The selection will also include the latest works by seasoned filmmakers, among them My Wife Cries by Angela Schanelec and Double Freedom by Lisandro Alonso.
The former Midnight Screenings section will once again carry the title Afterhours. These genre films intended for evening viewing include the feminist slasher Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, the energetic mockumentary about cultural icon Charli XCX, The Moment, or the South Korean zombie film Colony.
First-hand brews throughout the year.
