Holidays by the Sea

Official Selection - Competition 2011 / Holidays by the Sea / France 2011

In this original comedy describing how ordinary people spend their weekend, the stories of a wide range of characters intertwine although not all of them know each other. The incidents are connected by an absence of dialogue: the characters communicate through gestures, without any words. Filmmaker Pascal Rabaté is known in France for his comics, and, as with his second movie, he based his popular, critically-acclaimed first feature, Les petits ruisseaux (2010), on one of his comic books.

Synopsis

The weekend is coming and the various inhabitants of France, from punkers to retirees, are heading to a place of relaxation: an old married couple spend it in a trailer, neighbors with their teenage daughters occupy a small house, and a stern father instructs his family how to put up their tent.... The characters of this original comedy are many; each has his own story and they alternate and intertwine even though the protagonists only meet occasionally. But they all have one thing in common: we don’t hear their voices because they don’t communicate with words, but through expressions and gestures. Pascal Rabaté has shot a film without dialogue based on a comic book which he himself wrote. In transferring the work to the screen he found performers that share his characteristic sense of humor, among them Maria de Medeiros, who presented Hitler in Hollywood at last year’s KVIFF, and Dominique Pinon, known from Jeunet’s films Delicatessen and Amélie of Montmartre. The colorful incidents of these ordinary characters correspond in many ways to the mentality of the people of France – and perhaps even elsewhere.

About the director

Pascal Rabaté

Pascal Rabaté (b. 1961, Angers, France) graduated in engraving from art school in Angers, where he still lives. He is the author of several comic books, one of which became the basis for his first film, Les petits ruisseaux (2010), an exceptional success with French critics and viewers alike. For his next film, Holidays by the Sea, he also used another of his comics as its starting point. In another professional venture, Rabaté took up acting duties in the 2008 film Louise-Michel (dirs. Gustave de Kervern, Benoît Délepine).
