An impressionistic and disturbing black-and-white documentary short in which Sergei Loznitsa (My Joy, In the Fog) takes the viewer to an old wooden house in northwestern Russia. Like its inhabitants, the place has clearly been untouched by contemporary civilization. What is this building?
Sergei Loznitsa’s enigmatic black-and-white footage has been archived for a decade. Now, however, it has expanded his filmography, which betrays a dogged interest in the inhabitants of the former Soviet bloc. In this short doc from somewhere in northwestern Russia, the director works primarily with the uncertainty of where it all takes place, while giving the shots and the indistinct figures contained within them an aura of utter timelessness. The palpable impression of isolation here progresses to the revelation of a secret which clearly states that quiet doesn’t necessarily mean safety.

Sergei Loznitsa (b. 1964, Baranovichi, Belarus) graduated from Moscow’s VGIK. His documentary Portrait (2002) was awarded a Special Jury Mention at KVIFF 2003. The medium-length picture Artel (2006) won the best short documentary category at KVIFF 2007. Karlovy Vary audiences were also treated to his features My Joy (2010) and In the Fog (2012), the latter winning the FIPRESCI Prize at the Cannes IFF. At present he is working on another feature, Babi Yar.
