A movie-obsessed, 30-year-old woman finds romance and happiness in this Finnish equivalent of Bridget Jones´s Diary.
A movie-obsessed thirtysomething Finnish woman finds romance and happiness in the ambitious Lovers and Leavers, a comedic compendium of contempo romantic tropes that compares favorably with Bridget Jones´s Diary. "It´s my 30th birthday, and I can´t sleep," announces Iiris Vaara (Minna Haapkylä), whose life outside the bookstore where she works consists of a steady diet of Hollywood movies and a long procession of first dates. Though a relationship with budding film director Marko (Peter Franzén) starts promisingly, they soon break off and Iiris must rely on her inner resolve to regain her dignity and find peace. Leisurely script never met a romantic situation that didn´t have an applicable line from a movie, and the film is drenched in references and clips from high-profile Hollywood fare.
