Elio Petri: Notes on a Filmmaker

Tribute to Elio Petri 2014 / Elio Petri…appunti su un autore / Italy 2005

An acclaimed look at the career of the seminal, if nearly-forgotten, Italian filmmaker based on the reminiscences of friends and colleagues, including Paola Petri, Ennio Morricone, Franco Nero, and Vanessa Redgrave.

Elio Petri: Notes on a Filmmaker Elio Petri: Notes on a Filmmaker

Synopsis

Why is it virtually impossible to find Elio Petri’s movies? Why does he seem to have been expunged from our collective memory, this laurel-bedecked filmmaker who fully captured the intricate nature of existence during the sixties and seventies? The trio of filmmakers who shot this tribute to Petri were determined to obtain the answers. Milestones in the form of persuasive and emotionally compelling quotations separate the chapters of this chronological look at the director’s life and career, while the segments themselves are rounded out with film clips and anecdotes from friends and colleagues. Paola Petri, Bernardo Bertolucci, Robert Altman, Ennio Morricone, Franco Nero, Vanessa Redgrave, Giuliano Montaldo, Florinda Bolkan, Ursula Andress – they all speak about Elio Petri with excitement and enthusiasm, addressing his singularity in relation to postwar Italian film.

Federico Bacci has worked freelance making commercials and has been involved in radio, although he originally studied art. He cowrote the script for B.B. e il cormorano (2003), presented in the Critics’ Week at Cannes. Nicola Guarneri worked in his native Toscana on various film, theater, and dance productions, often under the auspices of his own group – named "aaut” – before moving to New York City in 2000. Stefano Leone studied and worked in both Italy and New York, where he finally settled. There, in 2000, he set up the UrbanSkin project, which led him to initiate the documentary on Petri. Earlier this year he organized a retrospective of the director’s work at MoMA in Manhattan.
