Only One Name in the Headlines

Tribute to Elio Petri 2014 / Soltanto un nome nei titoli di testa / Italy 2008

A documentary portrait of screenwriter and author Ugo Pirro, one of Elio Petri’s consistent collaborators (e.g. Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion and We Still Kill the Old Way) and co-author of films by Carlo Lizzani, Vittorio De Sica, and Lina Wertmüller.

Only One Name in the Headlines Only One Name in the Headlines

Synopsis

Foremost Italian screenwriter and one of Elio Petri’s fundamental collaborators, Ugo Pirro worked with filmmakers such as Carlo Lizzani, Giuseppe De Santis, Vittorio De Sica, Lina Wertmüller, and Mauro Bolognini. In his career he authored numerous books and more than 50 scripts, lending screenwriting talents to four of Petri’s films: We Still Kill the Old Way, Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion, The Working Class Goes to Heaven, and Property Is No Longer a Theft. With the help of film clips and the words of noteworthy individuals from different film industry professions – including actors Franco Nero and Massimo Ghini, director Carlo Lizzani, and film critic Tullio Kezich – Pirro’s student Daniele Di Biasio attempts to get at the creative essence of a charismatic man who was twice nominated for an Academy Award. At the same time his biopic weighs in on the importance of the screenwriting profession, the significance of which is often reduced to a mere name flashed onscreen as the movie opens.
