Sack Barrow

Tribute to Ben Rivers 2014 / Sack Barrow / United Kingdom 2010

A small London factory witnesses the final tremors of the production line before being relegated to the mercy of time – which has already done its work internally. This melancholy and poetic picture is no celebration of human ingenuity, but rather an attempt to come to terms with the possibilities of demise.

Synopsis

"I wanted a pervasive feeling of melancholy, but also an understanding of transformation,” Ben Rivers comments about documenting the demise of a small London factory. With subtle yet detailed detachment, the director captures the employees at work or punching their time cards for the last time, but he also films the texture of objects that someone obviously used for many years. What will happen to them now? Are they condemned to indifference, like the pictures of models the workers once used to decorate the walls and their lockers? The lack of spontaneous energy, however, doesn’t mean that abandoned things cease to live.
