Cloudy Times

Documentary Films - Competition 2014 / El tiempo nublado / Switzerland, Paraguay 2014

Gradually we descend into the scarred inner core of a director whose seriously ill mother is now unable to take care of herself in the last months of her life. The film sends a universal message about emotions that will buffet each of us at some point in our lives, whilst portraying a loving family relationship marked by the shadow of long-term separation.

Cloudy Times

Synopsis

Arami Ullón is returning to her native Paraguay to make a difficult decision. Mirna, her seriously ill mother, is losing the ability to take care of herself – epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease have taken control of her life. The director hesitates: should she put her mother in a retirement home or would it be better to temporarily sacrifice her plans for a family and career and take care of Mirna herself? Over the course of the film we are drawn into the creator’s scarred inner core. The relationship between mother and daughter is shaped in carefully chosen visual compositions that capture subtle gestures and facial expressions, and although the relationship brims with love and understanding, it is marked by the shadow of long separation. Family taboo, the upset endured by the daughter during the final months of her mother’s life, deeply rooted feelings of guilt from an inability to offer enough support – these are the topics of a universal message about emotions that will buffet each of us at some point in our lives.
