Paul Thomas Anderson, a regular Academy Award contender, is the first filmmaker in the world to have the courage to tackle one of Thomas Pynchon’s multilayered novels. The drug-drenched noir story of Inherent Vice – featuring Joaquin Phoenix and music by Jonny Greenwood – is in many ways reminiscent of Anderson’s smash Boogie Nights.
Inherent Vice takes place in 1970 when Los Angeles was just as decayed, drugged-out, and corrupt as in Raymond Chandler’s crime fiction days. Larry “Doc” Sportello (Joaquin Phoenix) makes his living as a detective who is eternally sloshed. Former girlfriend Shasta stops by to see Larry after her current lover goes missing, a real estate magnate named Mickey Wolfmann. Larry sets out to look for the man and finds himself running an obstacle course whose main hurdles involve a puffed up policeman played by Josh Brolin, an allegedly dead musician, a neo-Nazi biker gang, and various exotic ladies. For the second time, after There Will Be Blood, director Paul Thomas Anderson chose to adapt a literary work, this time by the elusive Thomas Pynchon. The retro mood here takes lessons from the spirited romp Boogie Nights, with the possible exception that Inherent Vice is set a decade earlier. The atmosphere of the film, composed primarily of narrow-angle shots, is energized by the music of Anderson’s long-term collaborator Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead.

Paul Thomas Anderson (b. 1970, Studio City, Los Angeles) started out as an assistant television show producer, later assuming the same role on independent films as well. He developed his feature debut Hard Eight (1996) during the Filmmaker’s Workshop at Sundance. A year later he released a drama set in the world of porn moviemaking, Boogie Nights, nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Screenplay. In 2000 he was honored with Berlin’s Golden Bear for the Tom Cruise epic Magnolia (1999), which also played KVIFF. He tried his hand at comedy with Punch-Drunk Love (2002), returning to drama five years later with There Will Be Blood (2007), which took two Oscars and a Silver Berlin Bear for direction. For The Master (2012) he earned a Silver Lion at Venice. His latest film Inherent Vice (2014) brought him his sixth Academy Award nomination.
