Washingtonia

Future Frames: Ten New Filmmakers To Follow 2015 / Washingtonia / Greece 2014

The mysterious term Washingtonia masks multiple meanings: it’s the name of the only palm tree not devoured by the red beetle, an alternate name for Athens, and the oppressive sadness brought on by the summer heat. But it is also an unusual film that, in the rhythm of a giraffe’s beating heart, combines beauty, sorrow, nostalgia, a longing for love, and an undetermined feeling of pain.

Washingtonia Washingtonia

Synopsis

“Washingtonia starts when the giraffe’s heart can no longer be heard. Washingtonia is an alternative name for Athens, a place where people, like animals, fall into summertime sadness because of the heat. Washingtonia is the only palm tree whose heart is not devoured by the red beetle. Because its heart is small and dry, and no one likes small and dry hearts.” The film is just as poetic as this synopsis: beauty, sorrow, nostalgia, the desire for love, and a vague feeling of pain. In the rhythm of a giraffe’s beating heart, the characters’ lives are intertwined with one another and with the suffering of dying palm trees.
