Synopsis

This feature debut from screenwriter and director Andrew Renzi, a rising star of American independent film, is another remarkable and ambitious project supported by the name and nuanced acting of American screen icon Richard Gere (think back three years to Arbitrage and don’t miss out on this year’s opening film Time Out of Mind). The title character is a wealthy philanthropist who, after five years hibernating on opioid analgesics, gets a chance to finally free himself of the devastating trauma he suffered over the loss of his closest friends. The perceptive viewer will see beyond the flamboyant gestures of the likeable Francis L. Watts, known as Franny, and appreciate the intense solitude that destiny has marked out for the dandyesque bon vivant. The drama costarring Dakota Fanning and Theo James was shot on 35mm by the extremely talented Joe Anderson (cinematographer on Simon Killer and DOP second unit on Ain’t Them Bodies Saints and Martha Marcy May Marlene).

About the director

Andrew Renzi

Andrew Renzi (b. 1984, Washington, D.C.) attended Brown University in Rhode Island where he studied literary arts focusing on playwriting and screenwriting. He worked in various producing capacities on films such as Afterschool (2008) and Two Gates of Sleep (2010), which were produced by the Brooklyn-based company Borderline Films. He shot the shorts The Fort (2011) and Karaoke! (2013), both screened to appreciative audiences at Sundance. He has produced and directed music clips for a series of artists (Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Mobb Deep, Blondfire and Zeds Dead). Fishtail, which competed last year at KVIFF, was his documentary debut. Renzi returns to Karlovy Vary with his first feature film, Franny, whose world premiere played this April at New York’s Tribeca festival.
