Mister V.

Variety Critics’ Choice: Europe Now! 2004 / Mister V. / France 2003

Tautly-told tale of a man fascinated by the eponymous wild stallion who killed his brother.

Mister V. Mister V.

Synopsis

A powerful colt of a movie by second-time director Emilie Deleuze (whose Peau neuve played Cannes´ Directors´ Fortnight in ´99). Mister V. is an unsentimental, tautly told tale of a man fascinated by the eponymous wild stallion who killed his brother. When trainer Luigi Lucatelli (Patrick Catalifo) buys the high-strung, unbroken Mister V. at auction, Luigi´s brother, Lucas (Mathieu Demy), is perpelexed by the purchase - until he realizes Luigi is working am insurance scam bankrolled by a smarmy Belgian breeder (Jean-Louis Richard). Then evil-tempered Mister V. kicks Luigi in the head, killing him. Deleuze´s clear-eyed investigation of the awkward bond between man and animal eschews anthropomorphism while still repectfully conveying an animale´s intelligence and emotional range.
