Tenants

Future Frames: Ten New Filmmakers To Follow 2016 / Lokatorki / Poland 2015

Thirtysomething Justine buys an apartment at auction but she is thwarted from moving in by the previous tenant, who has no interest in giving up her abode so easily. Tenants presents a sometimes frosty contemplation of the line between the right to exist and common compassion, which can be just as fragile as the glass doors separating the entryway from the rest of the apartment.

Tenants Tenants

Synopsis

Thirtysomething Justine tries to open the door of the apartment she just bought at auction and that should have been vacated long ago. But the key doesn’t fit the lock, and what’s even stranger is that when she tries to get in, the previous tenant – who has decided not to give up her abode – accuses her of breaking and entering. Stellar performances by the two lead actresses highlight the director’s sometimes chilly contemplation of the line between the right to exist and common human compassion, which can be just as fragile as the glass doors separating the entryway from the rest of the apartment.
