Dear Wendy

Horizons 2005 / Dear Wendy / Denmark, Germany, France, United Kingdom 2005

What happens to loner Dick when, instead of a toy gun, he chances upon the real thing? Answers are supplied by screenwriter Lars von Trier and director Thomas Vinterberg.

Dear Wendy

Synopsis

A nameless but idyllic small town in the mountains. The loner Dick is being brought up by the caring, anxious Clarabelle after his father is killed in a mining accident. Everyone, from his guardian to sheriff Krubsby, has always thought him to be a good, sweet-natured boy who wouldn’t hurt a fly. Dick’s secluded average life changes the moment he comes across, instead of a toy gun, a real weapon. What does unexpected ownership of this ’adult’  fetish do to Dick and his new friends, of whom he now suddenly has more than he could have hoped for. And what happens when he forms a secret club with them called The Dandies, run according to the paradoxical principles "pacifism and weapons"The author of the screenplay for this film, in an original way reflecting America’s fascination with guns, is Lars von Trier, a close colleague of director Thomas Vinterberg from the time of the Dogma 95 Manifesto.
