Universum Brdečka

Czech Films 2017–2018 2018 / Universum Brdečka / Czech Republic 2017

Creative fervour and the genesis of several legendary Czech films are mapped out in this documentary portrayal of a man whose life was defined by his passion for film. Jiří Brdečka became celebrated for his animation works and also for his screenplays written for the likes of Jan Werich and Oldřich Lipský. Documentarist Miroslav Janek allows us a glimpse into the filmmaker’s private world.

Synopsis

The incredibly versatile professional career of Jiří Brdečka, Czech screenwriter and illustrator, was grounded in his faith in the power of art. In Miroslav Janek’s documentary Brdečka’s enchantment with filmmaking begins with his work as a caricaturist and film critic. He taught himself to write screenplays by watching films, as we discover from his daughter, the writer Tereza Brdečková, who comments on the family’s history. Here, archive materials and various other sources unveil the personality of an intellectual who always yearned to discover faraway places, who didn’t consider his characters as heroes, but as people, and who co-created such legendary works as Lemonade Joe, Adele’s Dinner and The Mysterious Castle in the Carpathians.
