Employing purely cinematic devices, the film conveys to a hearing audience the way in which the hearing-impaired perceive the world around them. The Past tells the story of František, a lost man who lands himself in prison after killing the lover of his girlfriend Líza in a fit of rage. An evocative drama from Ivo Trajkov with Karel Zima in the lead role.
Hearing-impaired František lands himself in prison after killing the lover of his girlfriend Líza in a fit of panic and rage. When he is later released he sets out to find her, although his quest to locate his beloved is confounded by his handicap and by his blind faith in the assistance provided by former fellow inmate Standa. Ivo Trajkov decided to convey the swift course of events and the paralysis triggered by traumatic flashbacks using purely cinematic devices; the subjective experiences of the disoriented man are depicted practically without words. The film was made in conjunction with the Association of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and its uniqueness lies not only in its altruistic objectives, but also in its endeavour to convey to a hearing audience the way in which the hearing-impaired perceive the world around them.
