The Cordillera of Dreams

Horizons 2019 / La Cordillera de los sueños / Chile, France 2019

A documentary essay as much about memory as it is about mountains since the Andes have always protected Chileans from the outside world, but they have also kept it ruthlessly isolated. The history of the country is thus forever associated with this inhospitable and yet beautiful range, which is perhaps its last hope.

The Cordillera of Dreams The Cordillera of Dreams

Synopsis

When the sun rises in Chile, it has to scale hills and walls of rock before it reaches the peaks of the mountains. Because the Andes are everywhere, and yet they remain unknown territory to most of the country’s inhabitants. Patricio Guzmán sets out on a journey through the mountains, his usual somber narration accompanying elegant aerial shots of the mountain panorama. But his Andes are not just an impassive mountain range: the journey along its peaks also serves as a reconstruction of Chile’s history and an attempt at finding lost memory. After exploring the desert in Nostalgia for the Light and the sea in The Pearl Button, Guzmán concludes his personal Chilean trilogy with The Cordillera of Dreams.
