Ghost Town Anthology

Horizons 2019 / Répertoire des villes disparues / Canada 2019

After a tragic event strikes the remote town of Irénée-les-Neiges, the locals try to come to terms with their sorrow and doubt, but the arrival of strangely silent outsiders commands their attention. This melancholy portrait of a dying town, which screened in the main competition at this year’s Berlinale, plays with the ambiguity of the phrase “ghost town” and with the conventions of the ghost movie.

Synopsis

The remote town of Irénée-les-Neiges is shaken by the death of 21-year-old Simon, but the mayor categorically rejects the idea of an outside grief counselor: the closed-off community of just 215 inhabitants is capable of dealing with this tragedy on its own. “Some people go on and on about how the countryside is dying and how we’re all just lining up to become ghost towns,” she says at the funeral. If she had known that the locals would be forced to deal with the arrival of strangers while coming to terms with their sorrow and doubt, she might have kept silent. Denis Côté draws on the ambiguity of the term “ghost town” in his melancholy and subtly humorous eleventh film, which plays with the conventions of the ghost movie.
