Synopsis
Haider lives in the shadow of his father. In the traditionally patriarchal family consisting of an authoritative father, two sons, and their wives and children, Haider is the lowest-ranked member. His wife Mumtaz goes to work while he looks after the household. But one day, he succumbs to outside pressure and starts to look for a job. He eventually ends up working with a dance troupe led by the charismatic trans artist Biba. A devastating romance soon evolves. This year, the jury for the Un Certain Regard section presented its award to Joyland, an explosive, colorful, humorous, and sad chronicle of an unlikely love affair filled with all the elements of modern and traditional Pakistani society.
