Being in a Place: A Portrait of Margaret Tait

Being in a Place: A Portrait of Margaret Tait Being in a Place: A Portrait of Margaret Tait

Synopsis

We will find our way to a person if we get to know the places associated with them. In his 16mm documentary film Luke Fowler follows in the footsteps of medical doctor, poet and filmmaker Margaret Tait, a native of the Orkney Islands of Scotland. Here he presents both an objective and a poetically elusive portrait of a singular artist who has influenced the likes of director Charlotte Wells (Aftersun). Tait stated that the process of documenting deprives things of their poetic qualities; Fowler attempts gently to prove her wrong, moreover, incorporating one of her own unrealised film scripts in his work. Fragments of personal archival material and brand new footage are gradually pieced together to create a melancholy portrayal of an artist who remained entirely outside the trends.
