The Life and Times of John Garfield / The Postman Always Rings Twice / USA 1946
Celebrated in a number of film versions, James M. Cain’s controversial novel attracted the attention of major studios immediately after its publication in 1934. The rights were ultimately acquired by MGM, which nevertheless had to wait a decade before the censors relaxed. Cast alongside the exquisite Lana Turner was John Garfield, whose seven-year contract with Warner Bros. was coming to an end. Shortly after the Second World War came a film noir par excellence, featuring a cast headed by a darkly charismatic antihero, a drifter who succumbs to the charms of a femme fatale and agrees to a radical proposal to remove the impediment to their all-consuming passion. Frank Chambers and Cora Smith are still considered one of the most magnetic on-screen couples of all time.
