Postcolonialism is a long-running theme in the films of iconic South American director Lucrecia Martel. In her first feature-length documentary, she focuses on the situation in Argentina following the 2009 murder of indigenous activist Javier Chocobar. Despite clear evidence of guilt, the trial of his accused murderer does not begin until nine years later. Martel follows the course of the trial, revisits the moment of the murder, and gives voice to people for whom the case represents an extreme escalation of oppression that has lasted for generations. Martel premiered her auteur true-crime documentary last year in Venice, and it was named Best Film at the BFI Festival in London.
