Horizons / Yesterday the Eye Didn’t Sleep / Belgium, Lebanon, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia 2026
We find ourselves in the quiet fog of the Bekaa Valley on the border between Lebanon and Syria. Quietly, against the backdrop of the seemingly ordinary rhythm of life, the stories of the local inhabitants unfold with the potential to imperceptibly, and thus all the more powerfully, shake the entire region. Yesterday the Eye Didn’t Sleep is a film about women who are treated as the solution to one’s problems, and about men who affect the lives of the people around them. Palestinian director Rakan Mayasi’s debut film was significantly influenced by the story of his grandmother, who was forced into marriage at age fourteen. The result is not so much a straightforward narrative, but rather a space in which to deeply feel the injustices that continue to reign over the region today.
