Tributes / Basquiat / USA 1996
Jean-Michel Basquiat rose to fame from the streets of New York in the late 1970s and early 1980s, where his unassuming graffiti art caught the attention of the artistic elite. Almost overnight, a star was born – only to fade just as quickly. Originally a painter, now-renowned director Julian Schnabel chose Basquiat’s story to make his cinematic debut. Appearing in both major and minor roles are big-name stars such as Christopher Walken, Dennis Hopper, Willem Dafoe, Gary Oldman, and David Bowie, but dominating the pack is the then virtually unknown Jeffrey Wright, who portrayed Jean-Michel Basquiat with astonishing authenticity.
