Director Mihai Mincan, joined by his collaborators, presented his feature debut To the North to the audience in the Small Hall. The film was co-produced by five countries, including the Czech Republic, and premiered at last year’s Venice Film Festival. It follows a tragic story of two Romanians who want to escape the poverty in their home country and decide to leave for America as stowaways on a trans-oceanic freighter.
Touching briefly on the religion topics, the film explores primarily moral dilemmas, such as our courage to stand for our principles when we fear for life.
“The film mirrors the author’s state of mind. I wrote the script for To the North in 2016, when three terrorist attacks were committed in Brussels, Nice and Istanbul, respectively. At that time, I felt that moral values were on a decline throughout the world. I believe this film conveys this message,” the director explained his inspiration at Wednesday's screening.
First-hand brews throughout the year.
