Synopsis

During the 1940s chaos, confusion and anarchy were sweeping through continental China. Petty thief Sing is trying to work his way up to the criminal elite and become a member of the merciless and feared gang which controls the whole of Shanghai. He begins his career in an overpopulated district, where he is vainly seeking his niche as a blackmailer. The powerful gang sits up and takes notice when he tries to make some money using tragicomic methods, and, unintentionally, he starts off a battle between inhabitants of the district, and criminals from the gang. Several legendary masters of kung fu suddenly turn up. Sing senses that he lacks several basic prerequisites in order to become a true criminal and killer. Instead he is initiated into the true essence of kung fu mastery.
