The Manor

Documentary Films - Competition 2013 / The Manor / Canada 2013

Shawney Cohen’s highly personal view of his Canadian Jewish family’s extravagant way of life, which includes running a strip joint. The home environment could hardly be described as ideal; even so, they are a remarkably close-knit family.

The Manor The Manor

Synopsis

Thirty-six-year-old Shawney Cohen wants to be a filmmaker but he’s still working at the strip club his father has been operating for three decades. Shawney’s brother works there too, and one of the strippers turns out to be his girlfriend. But her origins aren’t Jewish, which doesn’t please his mildly despotic father. However, dad is even more concerned about his own serious weight problem, because of which he decides to have a stomach operation. He has other wrinkle-producing worries as well: his longtime employee Susan overdoses, one of his customers’ cars blows up, his assistant Bobby keeps getting thrown in jail, and his anorexic wife is overly solicitous. Shot with humorous detachment over the course of three years, Shawney Cohen’s highly personal film delves into the extravagant lifestyle of his Canadian Jewish family: although far from the ideal of family bliss, they are remarkably close. The film will be screened in its international premiere.
