After living together for years, Ben and George decide to give their relationship the official seal of approval. The happy event, however, brings huge changes into their lives, and financial straits force them for a time to live apart. The acclaimed director, whose picture played this year at Sundance, once again teases out the essence of his protagonists with abundant humanity, understanding, and humor.

Synopsis

After many years living together, Ben and George decide to officially sanction their relationship. Their romantic Manhattan ceremony is followed by a relaxed celebration among friends and family. But after finding out about the marriage, the principal of the Catholic school where George teaches fires him forthwith. The sudden change is a blow to their financial situation, and Ben and George are forced to give up their apartment – and to live apart, the most painful aspect of all. George moves in with a young gay police couple and Ben heads for Brooklyn to stay with his nephew’s family – temporarily they both hope.… The acclaimed director once again confirms his talent for getting inside his characters, uncovering their depth and complexity with abundant humanity, intuition, and humor. John Lithgow and Alfred Molina offer up excellent starring turns, marking characters Ben and George with great authenticity and imbuing them with irresistible charm and charisma. The outstanding Marisa Tomei appears in a supporting role.

About the director

Ira Sachs (b. 1965, Memphis, Tennessee), screenwriter and director, is one of the seminal figures of New York’s artistic queer community, and his movies are regularly hosted by international festivals. He graduated in literature and film theory from Yale University. He teaches at the Columbia University School of Film and is artistic advisor for Sundance Directors Lab. Among his movies, which generally treat gay topics, The Delta (1997) screened at KVIFF and the award-winning Forty Shades of Blue (2005) was presented at Sundance. Then came Married Life (2007), as well as Keep the Lights On, which screened at Sundance and Karlovy Vary in 2012. His latest picture, Love Is Strange, also appeared at Sundance. At present he is working on a new feature The Goodbye People.
