Made in Estonia

Variety Critics’ Choice: Europe Now! 2004 / Vanad ja kobedad saavad jalad alla / Estonia 2003

Goofy light satire centred on two Tallinn DJs and the soap opera they enact on their radio programme.

Made in Estonia

Synopsis

Made with zest, and more affection than anger, Made in Estonia reps a true-to-its-name light satire that has been pleasing crowds back home hungry for homegrown fare after a long industry drought. Goofy plot is framed by the device of two radio DJs improvising an on-air soap opera: pic cuts from the narrators to the soap-opera story, which forms the bulk of the film. This story centers on an aging Tallinn schlemiel coping with his forced move to the dilapidated but idyllically located digs in the southern countryside. Faces from the radio studio´s world crop up - often in surprising guises - in the soap, while re-emerging Estonia´s troubles get a gentle ribbing.
