In February 2000 a film crew set out for Italy in search of Brazilian war veterans who fought, primarily, at Monte Castello and Montessa. During World War Two 24,000 Brazilian troops fought in Italy, where they faced German units and the harsh European winter.
Synopsis
Twenty-four thousand Brazilian troops fought in Italy during World War Two. The biggest battles took place at Monte Castello and during the taking of Montessa. Brazilian soldiers had to face tough German units but also the harsh European winter. The film records the reminiscences of several who survived, among them telegraph operator Miguel Pereira (who remained in Italy after the war), important artist Carlos Scliar, journalist Joel Silveira and General Meira Mattos. In February 2000 the film crew set out for Italy to seek out remaining Brazilian war veterans.
About the director
Vinícius Reis has shot two shorts: A Rose Is a Rose and Wastefulness, and the documentaries Gentileza – The Prophet’s Life and We from the Hill. The Old Soldier´s Ballad is his first feature-length movie, his tribute to Brazilian heroes of World War Two.
