Bone Tomahawk

Midnight Screenings 2016 / Bone Tomahawk / USA 2015

The Wild West, a few tough guys, a rescue mission to bring back a kidnapped woman, and an Indian tribe of troglodytes who like to indulge in cannibalism. These are the main ingredients of a Western adventure ride featuring a protein-infused cocktail that embraces violence and is most decidedly not for the squeamish.

Bone Tomahawk Bone Tomahawk

Synopsis

The small town of Bright Hope sits in the middle of the Wild West insulated from any contact with the outside world. And so despite the high-minded sheriff, it’s not a bad place for bandits to hole up after robbing defenseless strangers. But robbery is a somewhat marginal problem for the local settlers compared to what they’re up against now. That’s because a tribe of Indian troglodytes living in a nearby valley like to indulge in a little cannibalism now and then (to replenish their supply of protein). And when they kidnap the stunning Samantha, an unlikely group of local men decide to liberate her in any way they can before the savages start planning the menu for their upcoming feast. Thus begins a daring rescue mission that violates the standard conventions of the Western genre: the picture revels in the kind of violence and humor that would dismay the squeamish – even if there were no such thing as a protein-infused cocktail.

About the director

S. Craig Zahler (b. 1973, Miami, Florida) studied cinematography at New York University, but he has realized his creative ambitions on a variety of fronts. In the field of music, he’s the lyricist and drummer for the metal band Realmbuilder. As a writer he has penned several popular Western novels, the first of which was A Congregation of Jackals (2010). In the world of film, he had to wait for his big break despite having written a number of screenplays, including The Brigands of Rattleborge, which circulated around Hollywood and made it to the top of the prestigious Black List of unrealized scripts. Steven Spielberg and Park Chan-wook showed interest but both ultimately backed away. Zahler then decided to direct another of his scripts himself, and he managed to find a highly respectable cast despite a modest budget. Bone Tomahawk is the 43-year-old filmmaker’s directorial debut.
