47 Meters Down

Midnight Screenings 2017 / 47 Meters Down / United Kingdom 2016

Watching sharks from an underwater cage is a guaranteed once-in-a-lifetime experience. Especially for two sisters enjoying the beaches of Mexico who have never gone deep sea diving before. But when the chain snaps, the two women cascade headlong into the deep, where the ocean predators are just waiting to turn them into their next meal.

Synopsis

Sisters Lisa and Kate travel to Mexico to get away from it all and enjoy what the country has to offer: lying out on a sun-drenched beach, hanging out by the pool with an ice-cold cocktail, and going to parties. During one such soirée, two local hunks convince them to try a once-in-a-lifetime experience – watching sharks from inside an underwater cage. But as often happens in movies like this, the chain snaps and the two women, who have no real diving experience, cascade headlong into the deep, where the enormous ocean predators are just waiting to turn them into their next meal. Kate and Lisa have an hour to get out of this dangerous situation before they run out of oxygen. A fresh take on a standard story concept makes the film a breathtaking struggle for survival full of original ideas, whose convincing and overpowering sense of oppression will quickly pull audiences below the surface and won’t let go.

About the director

Johannes Roberts

Johannes Roberts (b. 1976, Cambridge, UK), director and screenwriter, made his directing debut at age 25 with the sci-fi movie Sanitarium (2001). He continued shooting genre movies over the next few years but his first big success was the 2010 horror flick F, in which a group of teachers is terrorized by their students. The film has been shown at numerous genre festivals, including the Sitges FF, and even found distribution in multiple countries. He returned to the world of students in his subsequent television movie Roadkill (2011), where a group of kids must fight a deadly curse. His next project, Storage 24 (2012), was a commercial hit although critics were divided. The same year that he shot 47 Meters Down, he also completed The Other Side of the Door (2016).
