Horizons 2019 / Systemsprenger / Germany 2019

Nine-year-old Benni is a fragile kid filled with rage against all institutions because she believes they are keeping her from returning home to her mother. This energetic yet painfully touching debut won the Alfred Bauer Prize at this year’s Berlinale.

Synopsis

According to her files, nine-year-old Bernardette – or Benni as she likes to be called – is a system crasher, the term for a child whose problematic behavior presents a challenge for Germany’s social services. The fragile girl is filled with uncontrollable rage against any and all institutions because she believes they are keeping her from returning home to her mother and two younger siblings. Unfortunately, her mom can’t handle Benni even when the girl is on her best behavior. Is anyone capable of giving Benni the unconditional love she needs? This energetic but painfully touching debut took the Alfred Bauer Prize at this year’s Berlinale.
