We will probably hear a lot more about the director Daria Kashcheeva in the future. With her graduation film Daughter, she has bagged awards at both Sundance and the Czech Lion and won the prestigious Student Academy Award.
This year she brought her new film Electra to Karlovy Vary accompanied by actress Zuzana Částková and director of photography Tomáš Frkal. Part animation and part live-action, the film spends nearly half an hour exploring a childhood trauma that torments the protagonist Electra.
The artistic explosion of scenes left a palpable tension after the screening at the Drahomíra Cinema. “Electra, unlike Daughter, is entirely fictional, but it illustrates how repressed trauma can destroy a person from the inside. It can literally turn them into a puppet,” Kashcheeva described in the debate after the screening.
First-hand brews throughout the year.
