Desperate father (James Coburn) decides to find the owner of the gun which killed his daughter. This journey takes him across America, from legitimate gun shops to the black market, and finally to the world of pawnshops and nightclubs in Las Vegas. A film exploring America’s fascination with guns.

Synopsis

Penny Tillman travels home to Vermont to spend Christmas with her parents Martin and Anne: but a bullet turns the joy of reunion into tragedy. Devastated, Martin retreats into his shell. Finally, he decides to take action. Using the serial number of the .375 Magnum that killed Penny, Martin traces his grief to its point of origin. Starting with the factory where the gun was made, he starts tracking the gun from owner to owner. This journey takes him across America, from legitimate gun shops to the black market. When he traces the gun to the world of pawnshops and nightclubs in Las Vegas, Martin must face its final owner. He must also face the painful truth about his daughter’s death. Along with Michael Moore’s Bowling for Columbine, American Gun explores America’s fascination with guns, however, on a more personal level.
