Synopsis

The feature-length debut by Jiří Menzel, at home and abroad one of the most famous and most successful Czech films of the 1960s, is a tragi-comedy telling the story of the short life of unsalaried railway worker Miloš Hrma. He begins his first shift at a sleepy provincial railway station during the Second World War, but great events in history are wholly overshadowed by his somewhat delicate problem of enduring virginity, all the more undesirable for the fact that the attractive conductress Máša has taken a great fancy to him… Miloš appears as a naïve young man and also behaves as such; he seems to fit in extremely well with the gallery of peculiar station personnel who apply themselves eagerly to their private interests, whether this involves raising pigeons or stamping the comely bottom of the telephone operator during the night shift. No-one appears to take an interest in the War or politics, and Miloš’s anxieties are more akin to anecdotes which particularly amuse the station’s experienced Don Juan Hubička. The audience is also highly entertained and, even after Miloš’s surprising and failed suicide attempt, it seems that nothing can stop them laughing to the end. However, Destiny cannot be avoided, even at a forgotten little railway station. Miloš experiences moments of intoxicating rapture, he matures into a real man and then suddenly becomes a tragic hero. The film, based on Hrabal’s prose work of the same name, resembles a poem about the fragility and hardships of youth and about the fact that no-one is born a hero.

About the director

Jiří Menzel (b. 1938, Prague) studied direction at FAMU and, together with other fellow-students, helped to bring international recognition to Czechoslovak cinematography during the 1960s. He gave his successful debut with an adaptation of Hrabal´s Closely Watched Trains which won him an Oscar. He continued to focus chiefly on humorous adaptations of literary works, in particular, Bohumil Hrabal and Vladislav Vančura, and lightly stylised comedies, of which his most celebrated is My Sweet Little Village. After the mid-Sixties he began appearing more frequently as an actor on stage and in film; lately he has been devoting his time mostly to the theatre.
