Carlos is a tailor who, despite his extraordinary talent, makes the most of the city’s convenient anonymity: his veneer of respectability conceals a serial killer who feeds exclusively on human flesh. Carlos’s feelings towards his new female neighbour, however, gradually hinder his desire to make her his next victim.
Synopsis
Carlos is a quiet, inconspicuous inhabitant of the Andalusian city of Granada. Thanks to his unique talent as a tailor, he enjoys the respect of important members of the local community. Yet behind the mysterious and reclusive exterior of a man leading a largely solitary life hides a cold-blooded killer, who selects his female victims, carves them up and eats their flesh. His meticulous routine, however, starts to fall apart when a new neighbour moves into his apartment block. She arouses fascination in him not only as a potential victim, but also as a kindred soul for a heart in sudden turmoil. This disturbing film distinguishes itself by its ability to deftly cultivate the nuances of Carlos’s emotional transformation. The exquisite, precise shots, awarded a Goya for Best Cinematography, also succeed in revealing the perversity and menace of the repeated acts. Enhanced by its convincing acting performances and original grasp of the theme, the film makes for compelling viewing.
