"How happy is the blameless vestal’s lot! The world forgetting, by the world forgot. Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind! Each pray’r accepted, and each wish resign’d.” Michel Gondry’s cult movie tells a story of love between Joel and Clementine, a love so fated not even the latest science can overcome it. The onslaught of visual and plot ideas beckons the viewer on a wild ride through the dark recesses of a love-spotted mind.
Synopsis
"How happy is the blameless vestal’s lot! The world forgetting, by the world forgot. Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind! Each pray’r accepted, and each wish resign’d.” This quotation from Alexander Pope reflects the feelings of an assistant at a company that specializes in erasing its clients’ painful memories – everything from the loss of a pet to breaking up with the love of their lives. Joel Barish, perfectly portrayed by Jim Carrey, wants to forget Clementine (Kate Winslet), an eccentric clerk at a bookstore who celebrates each new phase in her life by changing her hair color to something even more wild. But love is stronger than science, and Joel’s inner self decides to fight the controlled memory erasure. Even ten years later, this cult film has lost none of its inventiveness and engrossing playfulness. The onslaught of visual and plot ideas beckons the viewer on a manic ride through the dark recesses of a love-spotted mind.
