A visually captivating film which tells the story of two young women – an Israeli and a Palestinian – who find themselves bogged down in their own respective lives. The director has turned out a highly distinctive form for a story reminiscent of a modern fairy tale for adults, filled with unexpected substitutions, apparent illogicalities, and also absurd and situation humour.

Synopsis

This visually captivating film tells the story of two young women – an Israeli and a Palestinian – who are mired in their own respective lives. Michal is a well-known and respected Jerusalem-based artist, while young Palestinian Nadine works in a furniture warehouse. After an unexpected mix-up at a checkpoint, they suddenly find themselves living the life of the other on opposite sides of the border. The plot of this playful film takes a backseat in favour of the talented director’s original approach to the narrative structure of a story filled with cases of mistaken identity, minor misunderstandings, apparent illogicalities, and also absurd and situation humour. Geffen, who also wrote the screenplay, found a highly distinctive form for her story: she presents us with a modern fairy tale for adults that addresses current themes not only pertinent to her own country, but also concerning human identity and the role of women in today’s society as a whole.

About the director

Shira Geffen

Shira Geffen (b. 1971, Tel Aviv) is one of Israel’s most distinctive contemporary artists. She has earned respect with her children’s books, stage plays, her direction for the theatre and also for her acting endeavours. Together with her husband Etgar Keret she wrote the script for the short film Three Towers (2006). She then teamed up with Keret once again to co-author and co-direct their feature debut Jellyfish (Meduzot), which was premiered in Cannes’ Critics’ Week in 2007 and won the prestigious Caméra d’Or. Her latest film, Self Made, for which she also wrote the screenplay, screened in the same section at Cannes this year.
